Alicia Vikander Replaces Michelle Williams As Queen Catherine Parr In Karim Ainouz’s ‘Firebrand’

Alicia Vikander (Blue Bayou) is replacing Michelle Williams as Queen Catherine Parr in the royal thriller Firebrand from Brazilian helmer Karim Ainouz (The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão), Deadline has confirmed. She’ll star alongside Jude Law, who is set to portray King Henry VIII.

Ainousz’s first English-language feature, based on Elizabeth Fremantle’s bestselling historical novel Queen’s Gambit, centers on Parr—Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife, who was the only one to avoid banishment or death.
By the time young Catherine Parr (Vikander) married the deteriorating, increasingly despotic King Henry VIII (Law), she had no assurances of a happy marriage; in fact, she had no assurances of surviving this marriage at all. Of her predecessors, two were thrown out, one died in childbirth and two were beheaded. While Catherine tried to keep her head about her to navigate the politics of her position, she brought a secret agenda. She was Protestant, believed it her duty to marry Henry, for it would be the only position in which she could convert him – and the kingdom – from his pro-Catholic position. That faith was tested when the church resisted granting his divorce from his first wife so he could marry Anne Boleyn, who would later be beheaded. With arrests, torture, and executions of Protestants on the rise, Catherine invited a dangerous game that would leave one of them dead before long. The thriller is told through Catherine’s singular point-of-view of the psychological horror of living with a monster—and the remarkable will to not only survive, but thrive.

Killing Eve‘s Jessica Ashworth and Henrietta Ashworth adapted the script, with Brouhaha Entertainment producing.

Vikander is perhaps best known for her Oscar-winning turn in Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl, and for her portrayal of the humanoid A.I. Ava in Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, which had her starring opposite Oscar Isaac. The actress recently wrapped production on Olivier Assayas’ limited series Irma Vep for A24 and HBO which is set to debut this fall, and most recently appeared in Justin Chon’s Blue Bayou for Focus Features, and David Lowery’s The Green Knight for A24. She has also appeared in films including The Glorias, Tomb Raider, Submergence, Tulip Fever, The Light Between Oceans, Jason Bourne, Burnt, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Testament of Youth, The Fifth Estate and Anna Karenina, among others.

News of Vikander’s Firebrand casting was first reported by The Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye, who joins Deadline next month. Vikander is represented by UTA and Tavistock Wood Management in the UK.

Alicia Vikander to Star in HBO Series ‘Irma Vep’ From Olivier Assayas

Alicia Vikander is teaming with French indie director Olivier Assayas for an HBO show.

The cabler has ordered “Irma Vep,” a limited series loosely based on on Assayas’ 1996 film of the same name, with Vikander in the lead role.

Assayas will write and direct the project which revolves around Mira (Vikander), an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who comes to France to star as “Irma Vep” in a remake of the French silent film classic, “Les Vampires.” Set against the backdrop of a lurid crime thriller, Mira struggles as the distinctions between herself and the character she plays begin to blur and merge.

The original film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and starred Maggie Cheung as a fictionalized version of herself.
“When the opportunity arose to partner with Alicia and Olivier we jumped at the chance,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming in a statement. “Olivier is a master at weaving unique narratives imbued with levity and drama and Alicia is one of the most versatile, celebrated actors of our time. They have an undeniable, distinct vision for the reimagining of Olivier’s cult classic film, and we can’t wait to tell it with them.”
The series hails from A24, expanding the studio’s relationship with HBO which also extends to critical and audience darling “Euphoria.” The latter’s creator Sam Levinson is on board to executive produce alongside Assayas, Vikander, Sylvie Barthet, Ashley Levinson, Kevin Turen and Stuart Manashil.

News of the “Irma Vep” series comes almost exactly a month after it emerged that Vikander is eyeing a lead role in a “Dial M for Murder” anthology series, which she is developing at MGM/UA Television alongside “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Sopranos” alum Terence Winter.

“I have been a long-time admirer of Olivier and his work,” said Vikander. “I am very excited for us to work together, and to be a part of the expanded universe of his superb cult classic, ‘Irma Vep.’ There are a lot of brilliant people coming together and I am delighted to be partnering with HBO and A24 on this special project.”

“I am immensely grateful to Alicia, A24, and HBO for giving me the incredible opportunity to explore and expand Irma Vep in a series format,” added Assayas. “This is a comedy that will try and catch the zeitgeist the same way the original Irma Vep did, in a very different world, a very different era, that right now feels light years away.”

Vikander is represented by Tavistock Wood in the U.K., UTA and Actors in Scandinavia.

Alicia Vikander Says Husband Michael Fassbender Surprised Her with a Birthday Trip to See Family

Alicia Vikander is spending her birthday with loved ones thanks to husband Michael Fassbender.

Though the Oscar winner turns 32 on Saturday, she revealed on Good Morning America Friday morning that she already got her big gift — a surprise trip to see her family.

Though the Oscar winner turns 32 on Saturday, she revealed on Good Morning America Friday morning that she already got her big gift — a surprise trip to see her family.

“Actually, my husband surprised me with a trip to Sweden,” she said. “Landed, I got a COVID test and was negative so I was able to hang out with my mom and my dad and a lot of family members I haven’t seen in a long time. So that was kind of a perfect gift.”

Vikander and Fassbender, 43, are celebrating their third anniversary this month after tying the knot in Ibiza in October 2017. The actors met in 2014 on the set of their film The Light Between Oceans, in which Vikander prophetically played Fassbender’s wife.

In 2017, they exchanged vows at the luxurious La Granja farmstead resort surrounded by friends and family, sources told PEOPLE at the time. Following Vikander and Fassbender’s under-the-radar wedding, the pair honeymooned in Italy.

The actress appeared on GMA to promote her upcoming film The Glorias, which follows the life of women’s rights icon Gloria Steinem. Vikander spent time with the activist before filming and even got to rehearse her character with the woman herself during a session alongside costar Julianne Moore.

“The first time I was so kind of amazed and starstruck and so honored to meet her,” Vikander said. “Then I finally got a second chance. She’s been extremely generous with giving her time and helping us out making a great movie, but also to get this film out.”

The Glorias is streaming on Amazon now.
